Dr. Larry Lawson

Following graduation, Larry Lawson enrolled immediately at Lamar University in the summer of ''63 with a scholarship in Music. Over the next few years, Larry became a Lamar Cheerleader, started a rock band (The Sandpipers / The Clique), and had a great time. At some point in those years at Lamar, Erv Prince and Larry rented a house and were roommates.
He left Lamar in his junior year to focus on his music career because his band began recording in Houston, with their first release and major national hit, "Splash 1," in 1967. After moving to Houston, Larry toured with his band and performed with some of the biggest names and rock groups from the US and England. In 1969, The Clique recorded their biggest Billboard National Top 20 hits with "Sugar on Sunday" and "Superman," later covered by REM in 1986. According to their record company, White Whale, The Clique sold over 5 million records and albums during this time.
Knowing that a rock n'' roll career wouldn't last forever, he retired from the "rock n roll" music biz in ''69. He entered the medical industry as a hospital representative for Johnson & Johnson...sidenote...Gordon LeBoeuf, our football coach at BCHS in the early '60s, became a recruiter and was responsible for recruiting Larry to J&J. Larry. He remained good friends until his death in 2009. Larry has remained in the medical device business for over 50 years, enjoying success and privileged to work with many extraordinary physicians worldwide. He’s proud to say the company he founded, eCardio (now Preventice), is a world leader in cardiovascular heart arrhythmia monitoring. He recently sold his company to Merck and Boston Scientific and founded three new Chicago and Houston companies.
Larry has been honored to be inducted into two Halls of Fame; he received an Honorary Doctorate from Lamar in 2012 and was Inducted into the GOOSE (Grand Order Of Successful Entrepreneurs) Society in 2015. In 2018, He was honored to be awarded the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans along with Reba McEntire and Rob Lowe. He received the award from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in the United States Supreme Court. Larry’s long-time friends, Erv Prince and his wife Pam, RC Slocum and his wife Nel, were his guests for this stellar event, along with world-famous astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Larry is an active member of TMCx, the Texas Medical Center’s Accelerator program. Larry has gifted scholarships and funds to various schools and universities throughout his lifetime, including a $1 million donation to his alma mater's science and engineering department, Lamar University. He has also donated to entrepreneur centers and facilities for the disabled in memory of his sister, who had spina bifida and was confined to a wheelchair her entire life. He has received numerous accolades, including election into the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame for his tenure with The Clique, Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of The Year in 2009, and Houston Technology Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Health Sciences in 2017.
Larry is active on many medical device company boards in addition to his own company boards. It keeps him very busy! Larry splits his time between living in Houston full-time and in the Austin area on Lake Travis. He returns to Bridge City when he can and notes that it’s changed so much…but also says change is good! A few years ago, Larry returned home to BC for his 50th Class Reunion and said, “It was great to see old friends and classmates. God bless us all! Classmates from the WAY COOLEST era of all time, please keep in touch.”
We are fortunate to have Larry as an Advisor on our Board of Directors.
